Shopify POS international: Our first omnichannel project outside Germany

With Piantala, we implemented our first international Shopify POS project — directly on site in Italy. For a highly frequented pop-up retail event, a scalable omnichannel setup with Shopify POS, mobile hardware, cashless checkout, inventory processes and legally compliant fiscalization was created.

Shopify POS projects now also internationally

As a Shopify partner agency, we have been helping retailers in Germany implement for years Unified commerce and omnichannel strategies with Shopify POS.

Now we've taken the next step:

Our first international Shopify POS project — right on site in Italy.

Together with our customer Piantala We implemented a highly frequented pop-up retail event and built the entire checkout system on Shopify POS.

From the German market to international retail

So far, our focus has been on Shopify POS projects in Germany — from:

The project: Pop-up retail with thousands of transactions per day

Piantala is an event retail concept for plants that organises pop-up sales in cities such as Milan or Turin.

The requirements:

  • several thousand transactions per day
  • very short sales periods
  • high customer frequency
  • completely cashless
  • mobile infrastructure

It is precisely such scenarios that show how powerful Shopify POS is in the event and retail environment.

Why Shopify POS is ideal for event and pop-up retail

The setup was specifically optimized for the event context:

  • quick checkout via optimized POS interfaces
  • mobile cash register system with iPad, POS Go & Tap to Pay
  • scalable infrastructure for multiple cash registers at the same time
  • stable processes even at high load

When it comes to events, one thing in particular counts:
Speed + stability + ease of use

Migration & Setup: From Existing Solution to Shopify POS

A key part of the project was full migration:

  • Transfer of all product data
  • Development of a structured goods logic
  • Adaptation to event-specific requirements
  • Setting up the entire POS infrastructure

In addition, processes were developed for:

  • inventory
  • logistics
  • Reporting

mapped directly in Shopify.

Fiscalization & compliance in international use

A particular difficulty with international projects:

We were also able to implement a fully compliant setup in the Italian market — including digital processes and modern fiscalization. Our partner OpenFiskal has made this possible. Unified commerce in practice

Shopify's strength is also evident in a temporary event setup:

  • central product data
  • uniform inventory
  • continuous sales processes
  • integrated goods movements between warehouse and event

Online, warehouse and POS data converge in one system. That is exactly the core of Unified commerce.

In use on site: setup, training & go-live

We not only supported the project remotely, but were also directly on site:

  • Set up all POS hardware
  • Setting up the systems
  • Training of over 20 employees
  • Live event support

As soon as the hub was connected, Shopify POS opened the hardware configuration in the app or recognized the devices directly. That's exactly where you notice: Shopify doesn't want this to be a tinkering lesson, but to be ready to use quickly.
