The most common questions & answers about accessibility

Who will be affected by the Accessibility Strengthening Act of 2025 (BFSG)?

The Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG 2025) applies to all companies offering digital products or services to consumers, including websites, online shops, self-service terminals, and digital communication services. This law is particularly relevant for e-commerce companies, banks, transportation service providers, and public authorities. Small companies may also be affected if they meet certain requirements.

Must all WCAG 2.1 accessibility criteria be met?

Not necessarily. The BFSG 2025 refers to EN 301 549, which uses WCAG 2.1 AA as a technical standard. In practice, this means that many, though not all, criteria must be met to comply with the law. Some requirements carry more weight than others depending on the context. We can help you identify the relevant WCAG 2.1 criteria for your project in a way that is pragmatic, legally secure, and implementable.

Is it mandatory to regularly check the accessibility of my website?

Although the BFSG 2025 does not require fixed test intervals, it is highly recommended that you regularly test your barrier-free website. Reasons for this include technical updates, new content, and changed legal requirements. Operators with ongoing maintenance requirements (e.g., online shops or portals) should perform an annual or semi-annual check to ensure long-term legal compliance and user-friendliness.
